After the first release of Titanium, we were really excited by the type of cooperation and collaboration going on in our community, and we wanted to make that even easier. Today, we announced Titanium PR2 with some major updates including a new Module API for extending the core Titanium platform, Linux support, and support for writing modules and application scripts using Python and Ruby.
But that’s not all. As part of Titanium PR2, we have included a new Titanium-based product called Titanium Developer. Titanium Developer represents a first step towards what we call “social development”. Social development combines the power of a web-connected desktop with social media and an open source community. The result is a new and more integrated way to engage, learn and collaborate with a global community of developers. Some of the initial features of Titanium Developer include:
- Integrated feeds from Twitter and FriendFeed that contain content specific to Appcelerator and Titanium.
- The ability to send Tweets directly from Titanium Developer.
- The ability to follow us on Twitter.
- A fully integrated IRC chat client that automatically connects to the Titanium Developer IRC channel.
Our goal was to give developers one place to find all information about Titanium and one place to interact and collaborate, not only with us, but also with each other.
Of course, we have also included features that will help developers create and manage Titanium-based applications, including a simple project creation wizard and a flexible packaging feature that makes it easy to build distributions for Mac, Windows and Linux. Titanium Developer also provides access to our API documentation.
By having all content in one, streamlined location, we think Titanium Developer will really change the way open source companies interact and engage with their communities. We’re excited to see what happens in the next few months!
For a more detailed walk-through of Titanium Developer’s new social media features, check out this screencast. We will be adding more features to Titanium Developer in future releases so we look forward to your feedback and input to make the product even better.

While the IRC and feeds are nice and all, the project management portion of the Titanium Developer app is where it’s at! Packaging can be a complicated process, and having a GUI as nice as the one you’re providing simplifies is significantly.
