Parijat Sahai on his Titanium Android App “Animal Sounds”

by Scott Schwarzhoff on August 20, 2009

If you’re a parent of small children, you’re going to LOVE this app (I know I do!). Parijat let us know this week that his app, Animal Sounds, was recently published on the Android Market. In his words, “I created “Animal Sounds” using Titanium in less than a week.”

App Description
Fun, kid friendly, FREE app for toddlers with as many as 20 farm and wild animals. Touch the images to hear the sounds. Also teaches kids the alphabet. Beautiful full size pictures and clear sounds. Keeps babies engaged while learning. Tip: Use Menu to change settings for sound and text. Push the text down to hide it.

In Parijat’s words:

I used Titanium Media and javascript ontouch events to create an interactive app for Toddlers. A particularily kid-friendly feature is the ability to horizontally scroll through thumbnails. Being a novice in html/javascript technology itself, forget any knowledge of native mobile development technology, developing the app was a formidable challenge and a steep learning curve. However, Titanium has and continues to significantly reduced the barriers of entry into the mobile app development world. With exceptional technical support from the Titanium team, I was able to quickly develop a UI that I had conceived a while back, which would be simple to use but complex to implement for a web programming novice like me. Of course, a lot needs to be done with Titanium to allow users to extract maximum number of cool features on native iPhone and/or Android platforms. I look forward to continued cooperation to build highly innovative apps using Titanium, thus establishing Titanium as a platform of choice for programmers looking for cross-platform compatibility.

In a future version, I plan to add three cool features: (1) make the thumbnail “ribbon” an infinitely scrolling ribbon so that there is no need to scroll back and forth to find pictures, (2) add an option for child lock (not sure if it’s possible in Titanium) so that a kid cannot accidentally exit the app causing other unintended actions on the phone, and (3) using accelerometer, allow the user to shake the phone and randomly show pictures. Lastly, I hope to package this app for iPhone in the near future too.
